Dysmenorrhea is the medical term for painful menstrual periods. It may involve cramping in the lower abdomen, Back pain, and may also include headaches, nausea, and fatigue. It can be primary (without any underlying condition) or secondary (caused by underlying conditions like endometriosis or fibroids).
There are two types of dysmennorhea, primary and secondary.Primary dysmennorhea is the pain and cramping associated with the monthly menstruation, with no other clinical cause. Secondary is caused by an underlying medical condition and usually responds to medical treatment. Primary is believed to be caused by excess production of prostaglandin. The main symptom is pain but may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and general soreness and malaise.
