coma and convulsion before, during or after the childbirth having characteristic edema ,hypertension and proteinuria.the basic pathophysiologic mechanism is vasospasm, leading to hypertension, proteinuria and dysfunction of organs. Dr.MS.
Usually pregnant women have lower side of normal blood pressure in early months of pregnancy. This blood pressure goes up some times. Then swelling is seen on the feet. You have to keep watch on urine albumin. This swelling may increase to cover the whole body and there is albumin in the urine. This serious condition is called as preeclampsia. Undiagnosed this will lead to serious complication called as eclampsia.
the difference is that in PRE ECLAMPSIA there is PROTEINURIA and Eclampsia there is no proteinuria!
Eclampsia is characterized by hypertension, edema, proteinuria and convulsion.
If not treated, eclampsia is almost always fatal.
Eclampsia occurs in about 1 out of every 200 women with preeclampsia.
This just means hypertension in pregnancy, although it may lead to eclampsia/fit/miscarriage.
Pre-eclampsia is a complication of pregnancy, not something a pregnant woman commits.
Eclampsia is a serious form of preeclampsia, is characterized by convulsions and sometimes coma Treatment for this condition is delivery of the fetus.
