In the military it used to be packaged foods that came in a small box aprox, 8" x 8" x 4" that were distributed out to the soldiers in a war time situation that is usually very high in Protien,fat, and carbs so that they may sustain a high level of performance with very little to eat. (eg. an 8 oz. can of meat product, a 2 ounce can of cheese, a metal can with four round crackers and a round chocolate bar, a foil package that contained two chicklets, toilet paper, and matches. In todays military it is Dehydrated foods that you mix with boiled water. They still call them each "C- Rations. In the WW1 and WW2 era the government rationed food by distributing stamps or script that you you had to produce at the time of purchasing certain foods in order to ration them so as not to run short and not have enough to send to the troops over seas, Hence the phrase "Food Rations"..............hope this helped.
