In a manual trans car it provides inertia (weight) to the spinning mass (crankshaft etc.) and a thick smooth surface for the clutch to 'grab'. In an automatic trans car it provides a place to bolt the torque converter (an automatic clutch of sorts). The torque converter is heavy, providing the weight needed. I both kinds of cars the fly wheel has 'teeth' on the outer circumference that the starter uses to spin the engine so it will start. I can also be used as an external balance point for the engine by either adding weight at certain points near the circumference or drilling or shaving certain places on the circumference.

Function of flywheel in reciprocating engine?

The flywheel smooths out the pulse of the power stroke and its inertia allows the crank shaft to continue rotating to bring the next piston into position to fire. Look at it like this: You could pedal your bicycle with one foot if the pedal had a flywheel on it.

What is function of clutch plate of a Vehicle?

A clutch pressure plate is used to clamp the disc to the flywheel and transfers the power to the transmission.

What is the function of a flywheel?

A flywheel is a heavy metal wheel attached to a drive shaft, having most of its weight concentrated at the circumference. Such a wheel resists changes in speed and helps steady the rotation of the shaft where a power source such as a piston engine exerts an uneven torque on the shaft or where the load is intermittent, as in piston pumps or punches. By slowly increasing the speed of a flywheel a small motor can store up energy that, if released in a short time, enables the motor to perform a function for which it is ordinarily too small. The flywheel was developed by James Watt in his work on the steam engine.
