What is global cooling?
There was a slight cooling around the middle of the 20th Century caused by the amount of pollution particles in the air. These were reflecting the sun's rays. When Clean Air Acts began to take effect around the world the air became cleaner and the cooling disappeared.
If global cooling means the gradual cooling into an Ice Age, then that has happened in the past and it has taken thousands of years to happen. The present global warming has all happened far faster, in less than 200 years, and is threatening all life on the planet if we can't stop it. Global warming is by far the more dangerous situation.
Global warming is when the global average annual temperature is generally trending upward. Global cooling is when it is trending downward. A: Global warming is happening now. Global warming is not beyond the control of mankind. It is being caused by our dependence on fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) which we are burning to produce electricity.
The phrase 'global cooling' is the exact opposite of 'global warming'. Though historically one tends to follow on from the other (that is, global temperature changes are often cyclical), if by 'lead to' you imply a causal link, then that would be incorrect. At the moment, the planet is experiencing global warming [see link titled "Global Climate Change" in the "Sources and Related Links" section below] which, without human activities, would eventually change to global…
Why air pollution that was once blamed for global cooling is now considered responsible for global warming?
No, unfortunately, it's the other way round. The use of energy sources from the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) in industry, transport and the generation of electricity, releases carbon dioxide. This is one of the greenhouse gases that is contributing to global warming, not global cooling.
Bombs have a minimal effect on global warming. The amount of smoke caused and carbon dioxide released is nothing compared to a single car. The amount of effect is increased by the environmental damage a bomb does. Bombs have been blamed for global cooling though. WW1 and WW2 both has cooling during those periods.
The best thing you can do for global warming is to focus on reducing your energy consumption, because the real issue facing the planet is our dwindling global energy resources. The science indicates that global warming is a natural phenomenon and as such there is little humans can do to stop it, or the global cooling cycle which will follow.
Not any more. There was a time in the mid-20th century when burning fossil fuel, particularly coal, put so much dust and particulate matter into the atmosphere that it reflected some of the heat from the sun, reducing the effects of global warming. Clean Air acts later made the atmosphere clean again and global cooling disappeared.
well if global warming is a hoax then i guess global cooling is too. both global warming and cooling are just natural cycles of the Earth which people have turned into something more than they actually are. i have never heard of it but i know global warming is real so if there's global warming there isn't global cooling because they are 2 different things The recent and sustained global warming period is now known…
Some suggest that in the absence of other factors, there should be a slight cooling at the present time. Whether or not this is true, it is being swamped by a quite rapid warming effect. The consensus of climate scientists is that global warming is happening and is caused substantially by human activities. the last ten years were the warmest since instrumental records began in 1850.
No because the Kyoto protocol assumes human beings are responsible for global warming. This is unlikely to be the case because the earth has gone through numerous cycles of warming and cooling going back long before human beings were a significant presence on this planet. Ever heard of the Ice Ages? There were several. Global warming and cooling are a function of solar activity and people can't control the sun.
Global dimming is a decrease in the amount of sunlight landing on earth that was measured between 1950 and 1990. It was caused by pollutants ('particulates') like sulphate aerosols ('floaters') in the air which absorbed and/or reflected solar energy, producing a slight cooling of the atmosphere, hiding the build-up of greenhouse gases. Anti-pollution laws gradually made the air cleaner and the cooling effect also disappeared. There is now no global dimming.
