When a human vomits, the gastric valve, or the valve which controls when food may enter the esophagus and enter the stomach, become irritated or the nervous system causes it to open, even though no food is waiting to enter the stomach. Then, your stomach churns as it always does, except this time, when it churns, its contents travel upwards through the esophagus and into the mouth.

The first 'thing' that comes to mind is "Ejecta". There are several reasons for this to occur.
