What is happening with a 1993 Toyota Tercel if the battery light goes on and the temperature goes to hot very quickly also the exhaust smells?

most likely the fuse relay is messed up or there is a problem internaly in the engine like to much oil or you might have a shot piston which means that basical you might need to rebuild it or just go out and get a new vechicle. If it's getting too hot ( temperature gauge goes near or into the red ) make sure you've got a radiator that's full ( CHECK IT WHEN IT'S COLD ! ) open the cap , when cold, the fluid should should be right to the top. If not, fill it up with de-ionised water & antifreeze. Replace the cap securely and run the engine. See what the temp gauge does. If you still have a problem or if the Radiator was full anyway the engine internal passages for water coolant may be blocked - Bad News! If the problem persists, let the engine cool down again ( cool to the touch ) and remove the Radiator cap again. If the fluid level has dropped again, remove the engine oil cap. If there is a brown caramel / fudge residue on the inside of the engine oil cap your radiator fluid is escaping into the engine oil - Bad News! Hard to fix
