What is impovisation?

Improvisation is the art of instant composing at the same time that the musician is playing. Mainly, though not exclusively, a tool of jazz musicians who are often (though somewhat unfairly) judged by the quality of their improvisations. It can be compared to a writer getting in touch with his or her muse. Improvisation can take various forms vis-a-vis a musician can simply pick up his instrument and simply begin to play (free Improvisation). An example of the latter would be Washington based guitarist, Aiman Fanous. Or within the context of a jazz band, each of the front line players would take turns to create a solo which would commonly be based upon the chord sequence of the tune that they were playing. And in certain instances, group improvisations might be attempted. In the latter, each musician would be listening to his colleagues and creating a line that successfully merged with theirs.
