West 89th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam is in the 10024 zip code, in the neighborhood known as the Upper West Side. The Upper West Side is a primarily residential neighborhood. In the last 25 years, it has become very gentrified, and now rent and condo prices there are sometimes even more expensive than the Upper East Side, which has long been known as Manhattan's wealthiest neighborhood.

However, although the neighborhood has become very gentrified, there are still plenty of low-income apartment buildings and railroad tenement apartments. So the neighborhood is a mix of wealthy, middle-class and poor people, which is not unusual at all in New York City.

The Upper West Side is bordered by Riverside Park to the west, and Central Park to the east. It is home to the American Museum of Natural History, the Hayden Planetarium, the Children's Museum of Manhattan, Zabar's, H&H Bagels, Fairway Markets, Barney Greengrass, Lincoln Center, the Beacon Theatre, Symphony Space Theatre, two movie theatres, the Dakota Building (where John Lennon lived and died), the El Dorado Building (also home to many celebrities) Magnolia Bakery, the Trinity School, The Calhoun School and the Collegiate School.

In Riverside Park at West 89th Street is the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, which commemorates the soldiers and sailors who died in the U.S. Civil War, and in Central Park at West 90th Street is the Jackie Onassis Reservoir (which was just the plain old Reservoir until she died).

The neighborhood is also positively packed with bars and restaurants, particularly up and down Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues. It's a pretty good neighborhood for shopping too, with lots of small, upscale boutiques and shops.

Also, West 84th Street from Riverside Drive to Broadway is known as Edgar Allan Poe Street, because the author once lived there. The address where he lived now houses a restaurant called Cafe Edgar's.

171 Amsterdam Avenue New York NY?

Since you did not actually ask a question, I'm not sure what you want to know about this address. 171 Amsterdam Avenue is between West 67th and West 68th Street. The closest subway station is the 66th Street-Lincoln Center stop on the 1 train (of the 1-2-3, the red line). Take the 1 train to 66th Street-Lincoln Center. You will exit the subway at 66th Street and Broadway. Walk one block north on Broadway to 67th Street, and turn left. Walk one block west on 67th to Amsterdam Avenue. Your destination is near the corner of 68th and Amsterdam. See the Related Link below for a complete New York City subway map.

Broadway is the street that all of the theaters are on. it was originally New York's main street, which made it a great place to open businesses such as theaters ** In reply to the above post: Most Broadway theaters are not actually on Broadway, but located in the Theatre District surrounding Broadway and crossroads between the 40's and 50's streets.
