A miner refers to what he is walking on in the mine as the floor or the sill. Also it may be called the belly. As if you are inside a fish- the roof is called the back, the walls are called the ribs.
It is a symbol in some Christian denominations to have a circle inside a square (or sometimes a square inside a circle). This represents the connection between heaven (the circle, which is one eternal round) and earth (the square, with the 'four corners' of the earth).
