When a cell membrane closes around the molecule to allow that molecule to enter the cell this process is called endocytosis. There are three types:

  1. pinocytosis - substance is mostly water
  2. phagocytosis - substance is a solid
  3. receptor-mediated endocytosis - requires the substance to bind to a membrane-bound receptor

When a part of the cell membrane closes around a molecule to allow another molecule to enter is called endocytosis.

During endocytosis a small portion of the cell membrane closes around the molecule that is to enter into the cell. The cell membrane first invaginates and then pinches off to form an endocytic vesicle that contains the molecule.
