Synesthesia is a condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another; as in several senses. You don't really "get" synesthesia, you can inherit it genetically from your parents. It is often times passed on through the x chromosome, which explains why women are several times more likely to have it than men.
You are most likely born with it and it is very rare. People who have lexical synesthesia see color in letters, numbers, or sounds,(and sometimes even in all three or just two). I learned a lot about it from " A Mango-Shaped Space" by Wendy Mass. This book is great, try it!
Synesthesia isn't a disease you contract. It's the instance in which people associate certain letters, numbers, or words with a specific color or place. For example: a synesthetic person may always see the letter "E" as red, or Wednesday in a three dimensional font. It is an involuntary and uncontrollable phenomenon that is estimated to effect about 1 in every 23 people. It is usually passed through the genes of families, and is not a contagious condition. If you want to know if you are synesthesic, there are plenty of tests around, some people aren't even aware of their rare and intriguing condition.
Let me start by clarifying that people do not "get" synesthesia like they can get a cold or a disease. Synesthesia is a neurological condition that one is born with. In some instances, head trauma can cause synesthesia to be 'gained' in people who previously did not have it. By and large, though, synesthesia is something one has from birth. It is a trait - not a disease- that tends to run in families.
It feels great to have synesthesia. It helps us remember things and when we realize it's not normal, we feel really bad. I don't literally see my colors, but when I close my eyes I can.
Synesthesia in Tagalog is "sinesestesiya." It is a sensory phenomenon where stimulation of one sense triggers an involuntary experience in another sense.
yes he does. he has lexical synesthesia
Nope, it's genetic. But some people have developed Synesthesia or something similar to it from a severe head injury
well, make sure you're alone and carefully tell him that you have synesthesia... if he really does like you he'll understand completely and not push the subject. You may want to explain what type of synesthesia you have and how it effects your everyday life (as he may not know what it is).
Yes, most people with synesthesia have the "five senses", unless of course they have a disability, in which case they would obviously not.
Richard E. Cytowic has written: 'Synesthesia' -- subject(s): Physiological aspects, Physiological aspects of Synesthesia, Senses and sensation, Synesthesia 'Wednesday is indigo blue' -- subject(s): Synesthesia, Emotions and cognition
Not at all. Synesthesia has no disadvantages other than a synesthete doesn't know what it is like to percieve things normally. Synesthesia will only enhance sleep if anything. I should know - I am one lol. I'm not saying that the above isn't true. however, i think that it would be a matter of opinion.
Synesthesia is not a symptom of anything, simply a harmless condition of the brain that people are born with.
== == ---- Also if you ask almost anybody who has synesthesia they will tell you that they wouldn't want to live without it and the it is enjoyable. == == == ==
Smell and sight are completely separate senses, unless you have synesthesia.
Synesthesia can be a symptom of hallucinogens or sleep deprivation, but otherwise would be very unlikely spontaniously.
One person in every 23 has one form of synesthesia or another. Around 1 in 90 have grapheme → color synesthesia where letters and numbers are tinged with color.
