The Christian Church Year is a calendar that focuses on the life and ministry of Jesus. In the Old Testament, the concept of sacred time became a vehicle for teaching the faith (read for example, Exodus 12-13). Today, in Christian communities around the world, there are traditional holiday celebrations common to all believers, as well as cultural and regional events and activities that get them into the rhythm and flow of the Christian story, to experience it, to learn it, to relive it through the telling and the doing. The exact time of the seasons, and even some of the seasons themselves, differ within various traditions, especially in the Eastern Orthodox tradition due both to various historical emphases, different ways of calculating the days, as well as using different calendars such as the Biblical Calendar or the Julian Calendar. Below is a 2010 Christian Calendar that follows the traditions most common in the Western church and practices most used by Protestant churches (largely shared by both Anglican and Catholic traditions) and which is synchronized with the widely used Gregorian Calendar:

The Season of Advent Year 2009 (Nov 29 - Dec 24, 2009)

First Sunday of Advent (Nov 29, 2009)

Second Sunday of Advent (Dec 6, 2009)

Ordinary Time after Epiphany until Lent (Jan 7 - Feb 16, 2010)

The Baptism of Our Lord (Jan 10, 2010)

Transfiguration Sunday (Feb 10, 2010)

Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras (Feb 16, 2010)

The Season of Lent (Feb 17 - Apr 3, 2010)

Ash Wednesday (Feb 17, 2010)

Holy Week (Mar 28-Apr 3, 2010)

Palm Sunday/Passion Sunday (Mar 28, 2010)

Maundy Thursday (April 1, 2010)

Good Friday (April 2, 2010)

Holy Saturday (Apr 3, 2010)

The Season of Easter (Apr 4 - May 23, 2010)

Easter Sunday (Apr 4, 2010)

Ascension Day (May 13, 2010)

Pentecost (May 23, 2010)

The Season After Pentecost/Ordinary Time (May 24-Nov 27, 2010)

Trinity Sunday (May 30, 2010)

All Saints Day (Nov 1, 2010)

Christ the King Sunday (Nov 27, 2010)

Season of Advent Year 2010 (Nov 28 - Dec 24, 2010)

Planned and purposeful observance of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ is an important tool for education and discipleship in the Faith, as well as a vehicle for spiritual growth and vitality of the whole community but especially for children to become aware in the context of community celebration those things that are important to their Faith (Deuteronomy 6:20-25). The sequence of seasons from Advent to Pentecost is an annual spiritual journey for worshipers as they kneel at the manger, listen on a hillside, walk the streets of Jerusalem, hear the roar of the mob, stand beneath the cross, and witness the resurrection! The rest of the church year provides opportunity to reflect on the meaning of the coming of Jesus and his commission to his people to be a light to the world. As a congregation moves through the church calendar, they are presented in an organized way with the opportunity to talk about, reflect upon, and respond to the entire range of faith confessions that lie at the heart of the Christian Faith.

How does the gregorian calendar differ from the Julian calendar?

The Julian calendar year was exactly 365.25 days. The Gregorian calendar year is 365.2425 days. While the difference is small (10.8 minutes), the effect was cumulative. Over the course of 1,200 years, the date of the vernal equinox had advanced by ten days. Since the Roman Catholic Church used the equinox to set the date of Easter, they considered it undesirable for it to be continually getting earlier in the year, so a change to the calendar was ordered by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. The Julian Calendar is exactly 365.25 days long. Therefore, every fourth year, an extra day is added, called leap year. An actual solar year is 11 minutes less than 365.25 days long. The Julian Calendar gained three days every 400 years. The Gregorian Calendar was adopted in the 16th century which dropping some calendar days, in order to realign the calendar and the equinox times.
