A phobia is an irrational yet extreme fear of an object or situation by a person; it stems from the Greek phobosmeaning 'fear'. Some are common such as tyrpanophobia (fear of needles or pins) while some are rather rarer, like gephyrophobia (fear of crossing bridges).

A phobia is a fear or loathing of something. My wife hated Spiders. Some people have a phobia of spiders, or even walking on cracks in the pavement. Some people will not leave their house - Agoraphobia. The sufferer only feels safe inside their home.
