A compound with a chiral carbon in its molecules has molecular isomers differing from each other primarily in whether compounds containing such carbon atoms rotate the plane of polarization of plane-polarized light clockwise or anticlockwise. In some instances in which one molecule containing a chiral atom reacts with another such compound, the difference between such isomer also the speed of chemical reactions; in some instances, only one of the isomers will react at all.
