What is the status of the design and build with the new public sector contracts?
Myles Shortall has written: 'Design and build procurement'
Procurement is the way of obtaining and procuring goods and services from one place to another. It helps to expand the business entity and reach to the potential customer.
Purchasing is primarily meant for buying one or more products / services in retail for personal use. It can be online and offline. Procurement is primarily meant for buying products / services in bulk for industrial, official use. Again this can be online and offline.
Design and build can be a much faster process than traditional. Traditional procurement relies on a much slower process, such as creating a bill of quantities. Traditional is used more for "one off" buildings that may be quite complex. Clients such as Asda, Tesco etc may want to use Design and build as most of there projects use a lot of standard components (an asda in London could be identical to one in Edinburgh!). D&B means the main contractor is responsible for the design and the construction of the project. D&B can be used when the client needs to fast track the building and have cost certainty. Almost 70% of traditional contracts end up over budget, compared to D&B which is only around 25-30% over budget.
