One question that many people who are exploring virtualization and simplifying the network process ask time and time again is: "What is meant by link virtualization?" This may see mto be an easy to answer question; however, the answer is not quite that simple.
Link virtualization (along with node virtualization) is a component of network virtualization. Essentially, link virtualization allows the transportation of multiple virtual links along the path of one single physical link. This is often accomplished by ATM, Ethernet802, MPLS or 1q-however, the virtual link may at times be identified implicitly.
There are many reasons why this is a beneficial service for network operators. Mainly, link virtualization improves the link utilization across the network, makes scalability simple, creates resiliency and security and makes it much easier to take advantage of technology such as traffic segmentation, link aggregation and traffic prioritization.
