Although the Earth contains about 71% water in total on the crust, most of it is salty water which can not be used to drink. A lot of the drinking water is also in underground sources such as underground lakes and natural aquifers. It takes technology and energy to obtain this water. Both of these add to the carbon cost of human use of the Earth. Any drinking water that we use must also be dealt with after it comes out of our bodies which means after it enters a sewage as black water or grey water. In less economically developed countries (formerlly known as the "third world") water can be hard to come by and may be many miles away from where it is needed. In the more economically developed countries we tend to not understand the issues involved because we can turn on a tap and get clean fresh water and flush the toilet to gt rid of the waste.
