There are many different definitions of "witch." In the modern religious sense a witch is a person, male or female, who practices the Pagan religion of Wicca, or a person who practices witchcraft without necessarily adhering to the Wiccan religion.

In the popular media, a witch is too often identified with the fictional characters from Fairy Tales or with one of the characters from The Wizard of Oz. From this viewpoint, witches are merely fictional. In other widespread views, witches are haggard, demented women who worship the Devil and take delight in causing harm to others, particularly to conservative Christians and children. This view is just as false as the witches of fairy tales.

Yet again, in a number of very conservative Fundamentalist and Evangelical Churches and Fellowships, any woman or girl who resists complete submission to male authority is accused of being a witch, whether or not she is a confessing Christian and leads a kind and godly life. In this view, all feminists and many professional women are regarded as witches.
