Motion tweening is a way in which Adobe Flash enables users to create certain animations (other animation programs have this feature, too, although it may have a different name).

For example, you can create two frames: the first frame will contain a graphic or text in a certain position on the screen, while the second frame will contain that same graphic or text in a different position. Assuming the content of both frames is on the same layer, you can apply motion tween to them. The result will be the graphic or text moving from one position to the other.

In another scenario, you may have different graphics or text in the two frames. When you apply motion tween to them, one will turn into the other.

The speed and smoothness at which one image changes into the other as a result of a motion tween depends on how many frames are between them and how fast you set the animation to play (how many frames per second).

Tween in flash?

There are 2 different types of Tweens in Flash. The first: 'Shape Tween' shape tween allows you to animate, say a circle, over a period of frames, you could shrink the circle, or expand the circle. The second: 'Motion Tween' motion tween allows you to move, say another circle, over a period of frames. MyTutorialz has posted a video on YouTube, on how to do both on these: Shape Tween: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uubh_oztG0M Motion Tween: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvNA9f3Fyqk

What is 'tweening' in regards to Flash?

Tweening in Flash is the process of creating an animation based on the start frame and end frame. For example, In the start frame, if you have and object at position A and in the end frame you move the object to position B and ask Flash to create a Tween, Flash will automatically generate the intermediate frames to show a smooth animation of the object moving from position A to B.
