This answer you will read is plain philosophical. Human nature is generic and indistinguishable, which changes with age and time. But constant elements in human nature are genetics, sense of recognition, degree of curiosity and dissatisfaction. Human nature tends to evolve in accordance to the situations and surroundings its breeding in.

In human nature and human behavior the latter is dependent upon former. Human behavior is a reflection of the nature that human holds which keeps changing as person social norms change whether these norms are acceptable or unacceptable in society.

The constant elements in human nature i stated above, are the ingredients needed to make a society where humans can live, provide for themselves and others, and influence each other. Changing human nature fueled by time and observation advances the society as a whole.

Biologically, group behavior makes sense, and a large portion of psychological and behavioral phenomena are biological. Group behavior increases chances for survival: hunting, living, traveling, gathering, etc. were all much more efficient and productive when done as a group.

Today, this is left over as the social drive of humans, or the desire to do things as a group. Group behavior often causes loss of inhibition or blurring of moral lines, as well as conformity. Asche (1950) is an example of group conformity, when participants conformed to an obviously wrong answer. The Prison Study, one of the most controversial and unethical experiments of modern psychology, shows "in group" and "out group" dynamics. This particular study had students arbitrarily divided into prisoners and guards. The guards had total control, the prisoners had total subjugation. Even perfectly moral Christian people ended up participating, as guards, in degrading and torturing the prisoners, or at least standing by and watching. The experiment stopped only when the researcher woke up to the fact that even he, an impartial observer, had been effected by the fact that he had power in the "prison".

Basically, then, group behavior suppresses the "individual identity" and expands and emphasizes a "group identity" which is greatly affected by how you fit in to the group, or what place you have in it. In general, this is just fine: school, job, friends, etc. are groups where you fit in a role, and its a good role to have and no one leads you astray, or if they do there are guidelines set by the authority in the group to reprimand you. But some groups (Nazi Germany, some asylums, the "Bad crowd", some countercultures, anarchist terrorism, fanaticism, etc.) are harmful to society and themselves. Society, too, can be seen as a macrocosm group, a large group we fit into, that differs from nation to nation and culture to culture.
