Northern
The American Civil War is sometimes called the War Between the States, the War of Rebellion, or the War for Southern Independence. People in the Northern States tended to call it the Civil War, even though it was, obviously, not very civil. People in the Southern States tended to call it "The War Between the States", which it was. So they were probably right. But the South lost. So the North got to pick the name.
Another name for the northern states, particularly in the context of the American Civil War, is the "Union." This term refers to the states that remained loyal to the federal government during the conflict, in contrast to the southern states that seceded and formed the Confederacy. Additionally, the term "Free States" can also be used to describe many of the northern states, which were generally opposed to slavery.
The term "southern states" should only be capitalized if it is used as part of a proper noun referring to a specific group of states, such as the Southern States of the United States. Otherwise, it should be written in lowercase.
Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere or prime meridian and the equator???
