Ashkelon. It's located in Israel. And its location there, on the Mediterranan coast, dates back about 5,000 years. It was a great trading center, because of its convenient location along the Syria-Mesopotamia trade route. It became ka one of the five cities [Ashdod, Ekron, Gath, Gaza] of the Philistines. It was the place where Delilah deceived Samson. It resisted conquest by King David [c. 1037 B.C. - c. 970 B.C.]. It was fought over by King Richard the Lion Heart [September 8, 1157-April 6, 1199] of England, and Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub ka Saladin [c. 1138-March 4, 1193] during the Christian Crusades to the Holy Land. It was taken over by Sultan al-Malik al-Zahir Rukn al-Din Baybars al-Bunduqdari, ka Abu al-Futuh and ka Baibars [1223-July 1, 1277]. But it was left to decline until the establishment of the State of Israel, in 1948. Its population now is estimated at 90,000. Because of its location, and its history, it's known for archaeological and beach activities.
