they raise issues that become important to a lot of voters
<><><>
A "third" party may attract supporters from a mainstream candidate, reducing the number of votes that candidate would have had.
Minor parties affect elections by raising issues unimportant to any elector except themselves, while fringe religious candidates such as Rick Santorum campaign on issues unimportant except to the most fervent Roman Catholic. Such groups try to hijack the mainstream issues important to most voters and substitute narrow topics of interest only to themselves and their immediate supporters.
Minor political parties or third parties can have an effect on American politics. One primary area where this can occur is with regard to controversial issues that the two main parties in the US, the Republicans and Democrats are reluctant to address. For example, at one time a flat tax to replace the US income tax was an issue only third parties had the courage to speak about. In the past this issue was laid aside by the major parties. Now and within the past 6 election cycles this issue has appeared and there has been no so-called "outrage" that a regressive flat tax in out of bounds.

raised and defined national issues that the larger parties either ignored or just didnt address.
Even though it may seem like minor parties don't have much of an effect on politics and elections, minor parties can actually make enough difference to change an election. Minor parties rarely win elections but are actually necessary to politics. The small amount of people that vote for minor parties could potentially cost enough for a major party to lose an election to the other major party. For example: If an election is 50/50 between Democratic and the Republican parties and 10 percent of the Democrats decide to vote for a minor party it would cost the Democrats the election. Hope this makes sense! Good luck!
