It was called a pseudocode interpreter for mathematical problems which was proposed in 1949 and ran on the UNIVAC I and II. Both of these are computers created by Mauchly. It was Mauchly's belief in the importance of languages led him to hire Grace Murray Hopper to develop a compiler for the UNIVAC.
