If the Arctic ice melts there is no land under the ice for polar bears. They will have to move to northern parts of Canada and other countries and try to adapt to a new habitat. They will have to change their hunting patterns (trapping seals under the ice) to different ways of catching land based prey. They will be regarded as intruders wherever they go.

Their home isn't melting. What is melting earlier each year and taking longer to return is the Arctic sea ice. Polar bears mainly eat seals, but they can only do that when there is sea ice to travel on. So when there is no sea ice, polar bears primarily just wait, although they do eat some lichens, birds, carrion, or other foods when they get the opportunity.

What is the status of polar bears?

The IUCN Red List has the Polar Bear listed as "vulnerable" with the population decreasing. While the US Fish and Wildlife Services, Endangered Species List has the Polar Bear listed as "threatened". Also The International Agreement on the Conservation of Polar Bears was signed to protect the Polar Bears from ruthless hunting tactics and the interruption, and disturbance of breeding dens. Of the 19 subpopulations of the Polar Bear, five are now declining, five are stable, two are increasing, but the remaining seven, are without sufficient data to come to any conclusion as to the population trend. Without this vital information, making any long term decision for the future of the Polar Bear is difficult at best and playing with fire in the worst conditions. How can orcas kill polar bears?

Yes. Polar Bears are full capable of killing a beluga whale. A female polar bear can kill a beluga by it's self!!!! Amazing!!!! In fact, due to the melting polar ice caps many polar bears are forced into the waters to kill their prey. There are less sea lions, seals, etc. for them to hunt and eat so they are turning to whales such as the Beluga. Polar bears have even crossed oceans seeking out food due to global warming. Research global warming and its effect on the polar bear for more information.
