Pop Art takes its name from 'popular' and 'populist', a reference to the way the 'movement' appealed to a wider base of people than earlier genres, which had usually been elitist. It's infancy was in the early days of music which had already been branded Pop, so the name sprang readily to the mind when it first appeared.

"Pop" is short for popular. This is true for both Pop Art and Pop Music.

Pop Art was an art movement that began in the 50s and 60s, first in the UK and America. It was partially a reaction to abstract painting, as a generation of younger artists began taking themes and ideas from popular culture--including advertising, comic books, and billboards--and incorporating them into their "fine" art.

One notable pop artist was Andy Warhol, who painted pictures of Campbell Soup Cans, silkscreened photos he found in newspapers onto canvasses, and made sculptures that looked like stacks of store products. Roy Lichtenstein created paintings that looked like enlarged comic book panels. Claes Oldenburg made giant sculptures of everyday objects like combs, scissors, and Hamburgers.

Among contemporary artists, Ed Ruscha, Charles Ray, and Jeff Koons could all be seen as continuing in the Pop Art tradition.
