Yes, a Sulfa drug is an antibiotic and responds best to UTI'S. It is not available over the counter (OTC) and can be quite expensive. If you do not have medical insurance let me know and I will give you some advice so that you may overcome this painful illness using a natural approach.

Antibiotics of many classes can be used to treat urinary tract infections.

Treatment decisions partially depend on age, where the patient lives, how many UTIs they have had in the past, if they have any indwelling hardware or anatomical abnormalities, are there known kidney stones, etc. Allergies and prior urine culture results are also considered.

For simple, uncomplicated UTIs, typically a medication such as nitrofurantoin or sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim is used. A 3 day course of a medication such as levaquin or sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim has been shown to have similar results to a longer course with the same or other medications, so these are frequent choices.

For older people, or those with complicated histories, the choices may be a little more difficult, but still the same medications are frequently used with success. This is where urine culture becomes more important to help guide therapy. Also, there is higher risk of significant morbidity in older patients, especially those with Diabetes or indwelling catheters or other hardware. Urinary stones also complicate the picture, and will usually need to be removed surgically if there is infection involved.

Note - those medications listed here are by no means the only ones used to treat UTIs. There are literally dozens of different antibiotics that can be used. These are some of the more common ones I have used in my practice. Your physician may have different preferences and prescribe differently, depending on your own particular circumstances and also your insurance coverage (although we all hate to think insurance changes our practice, I don't think you want to pay over 100 dollars for a course of levaquin for your UTI when 8 dollars of keflex would work just as well).
