One's ability to examine their thought processes and mental functioning as a separte entity that exists within them. A system within a system, or sorts. It involves stepping outside one's head, grabbing thoughts, feelings and experiences by the proverbial "horns". It's sorting those thoughts, discarding the unnecessary and replacing them with soundness, sensibility and clarity. Finally, it's about being able to understand and explain the occurrences of your life from the inside out. I describe the examination process to be one in which one might read a best selling novel about themselves or how they might approach a screaming, wiggling cardboard box along the road...willingly yet with trepidation.
