∙ 12y agoA register is a small place in your CPU that can store a very small amount of data, which it uses for operations such as addition and loading data from main memory. The register size is very important. Modern computers use a 32-bit or 64-bit register size. That means, when your 32-bit CPU is trying to add something. It can only add two 32-bit numbers, and give you a 32-bit result. The advantage of using registers is that even though they're small, they're very, very fast, though you can't have too many registers inside your CPU because they're insanely expensive. (in the ARM computer architecture, you've only got 16 total registers!)
