Purusha is the individual soul, which originates from Oversoul or the Lord. A Purusha, also known as soul cannot manifest on its own. Purusha can manifest only if it unites with Prakriti. Prakriti is the filed in which Purusha plays his game. Though Purusha is the cause of all the activities of a body, still it is not associated with any of the actions of the body. Prakriti is also known as Nature.

In Samkhya philosophy, prakriti is the primal material energy that exists independently of everything else, while purusha represents pure consciousness that is eternally separate from prakriti. The relationship between the two is that prakriti is the cause of the material world and all its manifestations, and purusha is the witness to the unfolding of prakriti without any involvement or attachment.
