Remeron is the brand name of the anti-depressant mirtazapine. Mirtazapine does not belong to any of the other anti-depressants - it is in a class of its own. It works by causing you release more norepinephrine and serotonin. It actually works on different serotonin receptors than the SSRIs, and as a result, has does not have some of the side effects associated with that class - namely sexual dysfunction. It does work on histamine receptors, which is related to one of its main side effects: sleepiness. Another big side effect is increase in hunger leading to weight gain. Mirtazapine is a good anti-depressant for those people experiencing weight loss and insomnia. It is also helpful for those people with anxiety related to their depression. Hope this helps!
