You should by a service manual from the parts store where you get the water pump for step by step instructions and photographs.
changing the water pump is quite involved. I recommend a manual. The BGB is expensive, but is well worth it.

The water pump does not have a specified life span. The time to replace it is when it is leaking or noisy.
Drain the water from the cooling system. Remove the water pump hoses. Remove the water pump retaining bolts. Remove the water pump gasket and clean the surface. Reverse the process to install the new water pump.
