It is quite common for a male Mormon missionary to leave a girlfriend at home while he is serving. There are some guidelines that the couple must follow as missionaries are not allowed to have romantic relationships. Of course they will not see each other or speak on the phone, and they will generally be allowed to exchange one email or letter each week. These letters should not be too romantic in nature, because this could prove distracting to the missionary. A boy leaving his girlfriend to serve a mission is usually viewed as a very honorable action, and shows that he is willing to give up everything he has to serve and obey God.
It is also pretty common for the missionary to get a "Dear John" letter from his girlfriend while he is gone, ending the relationship. This isn't surprising as a long-distance relationship with so little contact is extremely difficult. However, many Mormon girls do successfully wait for their missionaries and later marry them, including myself, my aunts, and my grandmother!

Unfortunately, Mormon missionaries are not allowed to date or even be alone with someone other than their assigned missionary companion.
