Beethoven was one of the first composers to move from the notion that a musician was a servant and produced powerful individualistic music, not necessarily what his patron had requested. He catered to the tastes of a rising middle class in a time of great social upheaval in Europe and possibly contributed to birth of the Romantic Era.
He showed by example a new way of writing art-songs (Lieder). In his late symphonies and chamber music he Pioneered romanticism and proved that it was possible to create monumental music without imitating Beethoven. His influence can be heard in Schumann, Dvorak and later composers even into the late 20Th century. In his own time before his death November 19, 1828 most of his major masterpieces were virtually unknown beyond his loyal circle of friends.
He composed music especially for piano. His work is the synthesis of folklore, romanticism and Vienna classics.
