The South simply felt like a different nation from the USA.

It had grown rich on cotton, which was supported by slave-labour. It had almost no other industry, so it ddepended on imports. The North was trying to protect its own industry by taxing cheap foreign imports. This looked like the North taxing the South.

In the big westward expansion of the USA, it was getting more difficult to create new slave-states, as the Abolitionist movement was growing more powerful in Congress.

All of this caused the South to break away and form a new nation - the Confederate States of America.
