After the American Revolution, many of the veterans returned home to discover that the new nation was in a economic depression due to the large was debt and the lack of value of the currency.

In Massachusetts farmers who took out large loans to grow food for the war, effort found that their debts were being called up by the banks those who couldn't pay were often jailed.

As more and more men were being imprisoned those who weren't become restless about their own futures and the futures of their families.

Daniel Shay took the lead by training the farmers as an army pulling from his experience in the Revolution and they began closing the courts by force so on more of the farmers would tries and jail.

The state government found itself in trouble and began to raise a mercenary army to fight Shay's.

Shays went after the armory at Spring field were he met with 900 militia who fired on Shay's forced who then turned and retreated.
