The Battle of Britain is the term given to describe the air battle in Britain between the RAF (Royal Air Force) and the Luftwaffe (German Air Force) in the Summer of 1940. The battle took place as Hitler believed that 'Operation Sealion' (The Nazis plan to invade Britain) would not be successful unless the Nazis had complete air dominance over Britain before the invasion fleet arrived.

The Battle of Britain describes the attempt by the Luftwaffe to bomb England into submission. (Luftwaffe is the German word for air weapon meaning air force). The British used radar to find out when German planes were coming. That way their fighters could be ready to take off with their guns loaded and their gas tanks full at all times. They did not need to fly around waiting for the enemy to attack and perhaps leave the battle low on fuel. The British had the spitfire for their main plane. It was not quite as fast as the German ME 109 but it was more maneuverable. The British pilots shot down between 4 and 5 German planes for every British plane shot down. When a British pilot was shot down, he would parachute onto English soil. When a German would parachute onto English soil, he became a Prisoner of War. At this point, Germany had thought victory would come easy and was training fewer pilots.
