Lead alloy and zinc plates in a sulfuric acid bath.
The substance that is reduced in a lead battery as it generates electric currents is lead dioxide. You can recharge the battery by reversing the direction the current is flowing.
battery acid
it is the strongest acid e.g battery acid
lead oxide
Ammonia
The battery should not smoke when the key is turned; it should not do anything other than deliver electrical current. If the battery "smokes", the cause for this would be an excessive electrical current conducting through either a substance on the surface of the battery or the electrolytic solution inside, which would result from a malfunction of the battery (such as a cracked or broken area or a manufacturing error, etc.). In either situation, the excessive current throught the substance heats and burns the substance, and you then would see the burned vapor as the "smoking" action.
In a normal battery; Copper and Zinc.
If you mix them, you will create a chlorine.
battery acid with a pH of 0.8
Inside of a AA battery is something called an electrolyte, which is a conductive substance that connects to the battery's anode and cathode, thus allowing current to flow through it. An electrolyte can be a paste, liquid, or gel.

It sounds as though your battery is dying. It also could be the battery cables are corroded. Check the battery terminals and if they are corroded, then clean them and the cables with a brush and put petroleum jelly or some other protective substance on them. You may have to replace the battery and/or the cables as well.
