Telegraphic transmission is the transfer of information via a telegraph. The telegraph sends a "picture" ("graph") across a distance ("tele"). In the system with which we are probably most familiar, simply closing and then opening an electrical circuit will cause audible "clicks" at a remote site. The telegrapher who listens in will interpret the clicks (of Morse Code, perhaps), and create a picture, which will be a page of writing containing the message. Click, click, click. Simple and easy. Clever, too.
