Telemetry is a technology that allows the remote measurement and reporting of information of interest to the system designer or operator1.

This is applied to the health field in the form of remote heart monitors. The monitor is attached to the patient, which reports their heart rate/rhythm to a monitor room, usually located in the nurses station at a hospital.

Telemetry is the term used for monitoring and/or controlling something from a remote location using electrical signals. It can be via telephone line, radio signal, cellular signal, leased line, etc It can be on all the time or "call in" at pre-programmed times or when certain events occur. It has uses in industrial applications such as un-manned pump stations, and medical applications such as heart monitoring

Why is a prairie chicken endangered?

Greater Prairie-Chickens are not threatened by severe winter weather. When the snow is thick they "dive" in to the snow to keep warm. A greater threat to the prairie-chickens comes in the from of spring rains. These sometimes drenching rains can wreak havoc on their chicks. Another major natural threat is drought. A drought can destroy food and make it difficult for the chicks. Human interactions are by far the greatest threat. The conversion of native prairie to cropland is very detrimental to these birds. It was found in a radio telemetry study conducted by Kansas State University that "most prairie-chicken hens avoided nesting or rearing their broods within a quarter-mile of power lines and within a third-mile of improved roads." (Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks) It was also found that the prairie-chickens avoided communication towers and rural farms.

What is the most important part on the Hubble Space Telescope?

There are 2 key pieces of electronics aboard HST that if they were to fail would essentially end HST's service life:Fine Guidance Sensors (FGS) are arguably the single most key pieces of electronics on HST. The FGS's are what point HST and keep it locked in position while observations are being made, a difficult task considering that HST orbits the Earth every 96 minutes, and is subject to extreme thermal stresses every time it passes through the solar terminator (the line between darkness and sunlight in orbit).Science Instrument / Command & Data Handling Unit (SI C&DH) - The very first item I worked on during my years with the HST program, the SI C&DH converts all science data from HST observations prior to relaying to the ground via telemetry. Without this key unit, data from Hubble could not be transmitted to the Space Telescope Science Institute in Maryland (HST's control center), and HST's function would be useless. There are 2 SI C&DH units, one primary and one backup. One failed just prior to the last servicing mission; it was delayed so a spare unit (there are always at least 1 or 2 flight units available on the ground, or if necessary an engineering unit can be made flight-ready) could be readied and the Astronauts could prepare for replacing this key unit.

Will apophis hit earth?

They don't think so, but it will be very close in 2029. There is more concern about the next time it comes by, but that's really not that far off, it will be in 2036. _____________________________________________ When Apophis comes close to Earth (and it will be VERY close on an astronomical scale - below the altitude of geosynchronous satellites!) on Friday, April 13, 2029, it WILL MISS. However, we cannot accurately predict PRECISELY how close it will come, and how the orbit of Apophis will be altered by the Earth's gravity. And when Apophis returns to near-Earth space, on Friday, April 13, 3036, there is a very small chance that it will strike the Earth. However, during the close pass in 2029, we will plant telemetry sensors and radar reflectors which will enable us to track it with perfect accuracy. And if we're smart - and nobody ever accused NASA of being smart! - we will also plant two very large nuclear weapons on Apophis. Then, several months later, when we've had time to calculate its orbit to see exactly where it will be in 2036, we can determine whether one or both of the weapons should be detonated to nudge Apophis into a safer orbit. And if it turns out that Apophis is not going to hit the Earth in 2036, then we can ignore them and watch the pretty asteroid scoot by. And in 2050 or so, we ought to be able to capture the asteroid and move it into a parking orbit, perhaps in the L4 or L5 points on the Moon's orbit. Just think; if this all works out, your grandchildren may live in the Apophis Station!
