There will be a cap labeled as auto trans fluid. It should be pulled out, wiped off, re-inserted, and pulled back out to measure the level of the fluid in the chamber.
Add 4 qts to trans before starting vehicle.Check trans dipstick for proper shifter location when checking fluid level.Let vehicle completely warm up,then re-check trans dipstick.Probably only end up with about 5 qts all together.
Remove the drain plug on the bottom to drain the old. Re install the plug. Remove the plug on the side to re fill, you will need a pump from Harbor Freight on a bottle with a squirt top. Fill on the side of the trans until the fluid reaches the drain plug you are filling it by. Re install the side plug, then you are done.
Yes, but why would you put an earlier trans. in unless it was cheap. I would change the 1-2 and 3-4 accumulators and you would have to re-pin the wiring harness to accept the 93 trans. Use Mercon 5 trans. fluid.
Total transmission capacity on a 46 RE is about twelve quarts.
check your trans fluid levels, they are possibly low. there should be a dipper (or dipstick) in the engine bay, when car is turned off, on level ground, remove dipper, wipe clean, & re dip, then check, there wil be indicating markers on the bottom of it put in new fluid. check the owners manual for the recommended fluid, & use that, usually it will be a standard ATF (auto trans fluid) it may have a trans filter also. not sure where the filter will live if it has one.
The dip stick for the trans. is on the passenger side, between the engine and the firewall. Run the engine to normal operating temp. and pull the stick, wipe it, re-insert it and pull it out. Follow the level marker on the stick. If you need to add, you will need a funnel with a long neck and the proper trans. fluid. Like dexron 3.
Drain the oil system completely - and leave overnight with the sump plug removed to get rid of as much of the transmission fluid as possible. Replace the sump plug and re-fill with a quality grade oil.
Similar symptom on my 95 Windstar before. First - warm up vehicle and check auto trans fluid level with vehicle level, in park and running. Check for level and smell fluid. Does it smell burnt? Is it a nice bright blood red or dark red/maybe a bit brownish? Add AUTO TRANS FLUID to full mark if needed. If it smells burnt or has brownish tinge to it take to instant oil change place and have trans fluid flushed/changed. This may solve problem for a while, but eventually you are going to have to have transmission rebuilt/changed. I had re-manufactured trans installed with a 3-yr 75,000 warranty for about $2,500. Good luck.
