What is a hunter pony?

There are basically two different type of ponies an equitation and a hunter. A hunter horse simply means that it has a nice gait, nice movement, stride, and a nice rounded jump to it. If you ever compete in a hunter division, it pretty much means that the judge is judging the horse more than the rider. So when you are being judged, you want you make it look like the horse is doing all the work. At a trot and/or canter, you want to let the reins go loose and let your horse stretch its neck. And at the jumps you want the horse/pony's leg to round up by its head. You cant trust this information (: I compete in both hunter and equitation with my 4 yr old pony :D

What would the best pony be for a medium rider?

If your meaning medium in height and you would like a pony not a horse I would recommend the Pony of America, Dartmoor, Connemara, Welsh and Hackney. They are all well-suited in size for medium heighted riders. If you are looking to buy an equine friend and you are medium sized I would strongly recommend a horse though because they are bigger and you won't grow out of them very quickly. I own quite a few quarter horses and they are a very easy going breed.

the best horse for a 10 year old would vary on their experience and height. an always good horse would be a quarter horse or quarter pony. any type of medium height pony (if the size permits) would work. also welsh ponies are among the best. mixed breeds make good rides too. you can also go to your local barn to ask a professional trainer to find you a suitable pony/horse. hope i helped, a pony luver
