The Public Health Act was passed in 1875 to address the dire public health conditions in the rapidly urbanizing and industrializing cities of England. The act aimed to improve sanitation and living conditions, control contagious diseases, and establish a system of local boards of health to oversee public health initiatives. The act was a response to the growing recognition of the link between poor public health and outbreaks of diseases, and it marked a significant step in the development of public health policies and practices.
The Act sets out the general duties which employers have towards employees and members of the public, and employees have to themselves and to each other.
