As far as I know, The PSP has 1 major advantage over other systems. Homebrew software. That's pretty big because it allows you to play, illegally, old school games from NES, Genesis, PlayStation, or ANY other game console. That means, Sonic the hedgehog, and Mario on the same platform at last!
Your best bet is searching for Firmware 2.5, since most code writers seem to like it. You might need to roll back your firmware, since it will probably be at 3.5 or something, if you have been playing recently released games.
Caution: Using homebrew or trying to mod your PSP MIGHT permanently break it alltogether.
Also, PSPs are good as mini Ipods that can play HD quality movies in wide screen format and hold great looking picture files.
Not so much for the games. Actually, that's the worst part, aside from God of war, and a couple of stand outs. You can also browse the internet, but why bother...
Most people buy a PSP to play games.
Other than that, you can also use the PSP to watch movies, videos and listen to music.
Also you can connect to wifi and surf the net with your PSP.
Portable games have seen a massive rise in popularity over the past ten years with the advent of many newer technologies that put them on par even with console systems. The portable games of today are often so graphically intense that many people only own these portable devices and shun the consoles altogether. In terms of their benefit on a long trip, their importance can't be overstated. However, you do need to take into account the fact that these machines use a lot of battery power and therefore require a bunch of recharging. Because of this, you will find it to be in your best interest to invest in a car charger for your portable games. This way, you never have to be without your favorite games.
