Lot's of photographers use digital image processing as opposed to old fashioned because you can do non-destructive editing and come back at a later time and make changes. Using the old fashioned way of editing (using film and chemicals), if you ie. overexpose part of the image, or remove an element, you are stuck with the changes you made.
