The ancient Egyptian language has several words for "man", with different shades of meaning. Since all these words are only known from hieroglyphs, which did not include any vowels, we only have the consonant skeleton of each word:

  • rmT means man or mankind, or men in general
  • sr is a nobleman or magistrate
  • mniw is a herdsman (the i represents a sound not found in English)
  • Shps is a nobleman or wealthy man
  • tp is a headman or chief
  • rxyt is common folk, mankind
  • rnp is a young man
  • wsr is a wealthy or rich man
  • T'y is a male (man as opposed to woman)
  • s is a person, a man of rank
  • Hwn is achild or young man
