On May2-5, 1963, Rev. James Bevel organized hundreds of school children in Birmingham, Alabama to march through the town during the American Civil Rights Movement's Birmingham Campaign to meet the mayor and speak to him about their feelings on segregation. Though the children and their organizers remained peaceful, police arrested many of the children and ordered fire hoses and police dogs to help stop the march. This march and the resulting actions against it were one factor that led to the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
