Do you really not know??
King George VI died on 6th February, 1952 at the age of 57. His elder daughter, Princess Elizabeth was staying in Kenya at the time, the first stop on a Commonwealth tour that would have taken her, and Prince Philip, on to Australia and New Zealand.
It was Prince Philip who broke the news to his wife that her father had died and she was now Queen. She flew back immediately to London, to be met at the steps of her 'plane by Sir Winston Churchill, her first Prime Minister. She was just 25 years old.
This year, 2012, marks the 60 years of her reign - a Diamond Jubilee - and the peoples of the sixteen countries of which she is Head of State, along with the 54 countries of the Commonwealth are paying tribute to this woman who is now 86 years old, and has devoted her life to their service. I consider it a privilege to be her subject, and if there is one outstanding fact that has become a certainty this year, is that the overwhelming majority of her subjects around the world feel the same. I hope Her Majesty has felt something, in recent weeks, of the esteem and deep affection in which she is held. At an age where most people are well into retirement, she takes very seriously her Coronation vows, and will carry out her public engagements, as well as the unseen ones, such as reading the parliamentary proceedings of the countries of which she is Sovereign on a daily basis (she estimates it takes four hours per day) until the end of her life.
