A ethernet port is a common port on most computer / laptops and quite a few other new updated devices such as tv. This device in general households can be used to connect to the internet from a modem but more often then not wireless technology is implemented. The port in a office example is used to not only connect to the internet but also connect to the local area network which is made up of all the users who are connected to the same network. The ethernet card is something which is not generally used/bought any more as most recent motherboards in the last 5-10 years have a ethernet port already on them.
